About WTS

Why They’re Single is the tribute site to excellence and failure in online dating. Every day, millions of people try to get laid from their computers. We think their efforts deserve recognition and a wider audience.

At Why They’re Single you’ll find funny dating emails, botched pick-up lines, awkward dating photos, over-confident profiles, and romantic interactions that will either shock you (if you’re a stranger to online dating), amuse you (if you currently online date) or fill you with nostalgia (if you’ve graduated from online dating intact).

If you’re among the hundreds of millions of online daters worldwide, then Why They’re Single is your platform to tell your story. Next time you laugh, spit out your coffee, or drop your jaw while browsing a dating site, share the experience with Why They’re Single.

FAQ

Isn’t It Rude to Make Fun of People’s Dating Profiles

No, it’s the American way.

Where does this stuff come from?

Everything on Why They’re Single is user-submitted. Thank you for telling your friends who use online dating sites about us. The more submissions we get, the higher quality the content you see.

What kind of stuff should I submit?

The kind of stuff you see posted on the site. Anything funny, striking, clever, or WTF from dating sites or dating ads. That includes photos, emails, chats, and profile shots, from places like match.com, OK Cupid, Plenty of Fish, or Craigslist. It’s best to take a screenshot of the relevant part, not your whole screen.

What about online dating horror stories?

Sure, especially when combined with screenshots. Tell your story in the comment box on the Submit page or email it to submit@whytheyresingle.com.

What is your blurring policy?

We generally blur faces and screen-names or other identifying info from dating emails and chats.

We generally don’t blur anything from dating profiles or ads (they are published already), unless they have sensitive info like addresses or first and last names.

Please feel free to request blurring or redaction in the comment box of the submission form.

Are submissions anonymous?

Yes. We will not publish any information about who submitted the material unless you request us to. We ask that you provide an email address in case we need to contact you—for example, to let you know you’ve won a contest for best submission.

My submission hasn’t been published. What gives?

Sometimes there are too many submissions to publish. Sometimes the image submitted won’t fit the width of the site’s left column (hint: shrink your windows to wrap text). And sometimes we don’t publish submissions because they cross the line that separates playful from mean-spirited (e.g., we don’t make fun of people just because they are ugly or fat — they must earn the right to be here by their actions!).

Who is behind Why They’re Single?

Why They’re Single was created by a fellow who met the love of his life on a very fine dating site, okcupid.com, but only after several years of reviewing (and generating) ridiculous emails, photos and profile pronouncements.

Why They’re Single is not affiliated with any dating site. We don’t speak for them. We don’t work for them. They might some day advertise on here, but that’s it.

I am outraged that you posted my photo / profile / email. What can I do?

If you did not submit the material to us, then send an email to complaints@whytheyresingle.com and explain the deal. If you believe that your copyrighted material was published without your permission, refer to our Copyright Policy.

We’re not doing this to piss you off, but please be mindful of the First Amendment and rights to fair use of intellectual property. Folks are allowed to comment on and poke fun at stuff without breaking the law, just as you can criticize this website if you want.

We will consider all reasonable requests and comply with the law, but we also reserve the right to leave complained-of material on the site if we believe it’s appropriate.
